Basketball Hosts Special Olympics Scrimmage

The KU boys and girls basketball team hosted the Special Olympics basketball team in a scrimmage tonight in the KU Aux Gym. This event has been in the works for many weeks now with Coach Bret Crawford at the helm. Coach Crawford says that the event came to fruition as a practice. Coach Crawford said, "The Olympic team has a real game in Grants Pass next Saturday and needed a warm up. I said yes, I could put together some students to provide a (warm up) game." The game entered half time with the Pelicans down by 25. The Special Olympics coach asked Coach Crawford if the players could try a little harder. The KU players did just that. In the second half, KU tied the score and took the game to overtime. The KU team was gassed and exhausted after knotting up the score. The Special Olympics team was able to take advantage of the tired Pelicans and win in overtime by a final score of 76-73.

Coach Crawford said that he saw a player on the Special Olympics team that he remembered attended KU and played for the girls basketball team. "We both remembered each other. It made me smile." Crawford said. Crawford also said that this game really started to build a relationship with the Klamath Union Basketball teams and the Klamath Falls Special Olympics. Crawford stated "Our students that played tonight wanted to go and support this team the next time they play. An instant relationship was bounded."
